Mid Worcestershire Greens choose
general election candidate
justice, peace and the
environment top priorities for parliamentary hopeful
The Green Party has chosen its candidate
to fight the next general election here in Mid Worcestershire.
Gordon Matthews was selected at a special
selection meeting on Thursday (22nd November). He lives in Evesham and
is a Town Councillor on Evesham Town Council. This will be the first
time that the Green Party has contested the Mid Worcestershire
parliamentary seat.
Mr, Matthews studied Environmental Science at the
University of Bradford and obtained an upper second class honours
degree in 1978. He also trained as a teacher at Birmingham University
and taught geography, economics and maths at Stevenage College.
Since
1981 he has worked for a variety of Quaker and other church
organisations, mainly in the field of peace campaigning and
networking. Since his school days he has seen justice, peace
and the environment as a single complex of inter-related issues.
Said
Mr.Matthews:" I want to see a
reduction in the consumption of energy from non-renewable
resources, to
foster the peaceful resolution of conflict and to minimise the
squandering of human and other resources in war and military activity.
"We
need to foster
the development of economically viable communities which are safe,
sustainable, friendly and inclusive; and to
defend the rights of all who are
disadvantaged economically and socially. These are my priorities,
which I will be campaigning on from now until the general
election."
