Worcester Green Party candidates – City Council elections May 2008

Martin Sullivan (Arboretum ward) Martin has lived in Worcester for twelve years, is married with three children and works in computing. Having been involved in various environmental organisations, he is increasingly concerned about the environmental impact of various planning decisions in Worcester.

Jan Dyer (Battenhall ward) Jan works in Worcester, having come here to study for a degree in Environmental Science and Women's Studies. She is treasurer of her local Agenda 21 group and a member of Amnesty International and Sustrans, campaigning for better cycle facilities throughout the UK. Jan has been a Parish Councillor in West Malvern.

Clive Matthews (Bedwardine ward) Clive was born in North Worcestershire and has lived in Worcester City for 17 years. He has been a member of the Green Party for 18 years, and stood previously in a West Midlands local election. He is particularly interested in the protection and appreciation of open spaces in the city, and traffic calming in residential areas.

Louis Stephen (Cathedral ward) Louis is 41, has lived in Worcester for over 10 years and works within the city as an engineering manager for an international company in Warndon. He is married with two teenage children, who both attend local state schools. His biggest concern is climate change - Government, business and individuals need to work together to cut carbon emissions.

Peter Robinson (Claines ward) Since 1997, Peter has been the Campaign Group co-ordinator for Greenpeace in Worcestershire and Herefordshire. He has focused on such environmental issues as waste management, River Severn bank erosion and the retention of Worcester's High Street trees. He has lived in Claines for ten years with his wife and two children.

Linda Smith (Gorse Hill) Born in Worcester, Linda has spent most of her life living in the city. She works as a legal secretary, and joined the Green Party because of her love of the countryside and concern for animal welfare. Linda wants action to reduce the amount of fly-tipping that occurs in Gorse Hill and Warndon.

Alex Gwinn (Nunnery ward) Alex has enjoyed living in Worcester these last twelve years and found it to be a really welcoming and friendly place. He works as an IT Supervisor. He helped Worcester Technical College to become the first official Fairtrade College in the Midlands. Since then he has worked with others to ensure that Worcester becomes a Fairtrade City.

Ruth Stafford (Rainbow Hill ward) Ruth lives and works in Worcester. She is the Green Party’s general election candidate for Worcester and is an active member of the local Friends of the Earth and Greenpeace groups. She is particularly concerned about the effects our modern transport and shopping habits are having on our health, environment and well-being.

Olaf Twiehaus (St.Clement ward) Olaf has lived in the UK for seven years and works in marketing. Being from Germany, he has seen the Green Party grow over the last 20 years from small roots to a Party in government coalitions. He is particularly interested in green gardening, renewable energy and putting recycling on everyone's agenda.

Penny Asquith (St.Stephen ward) “Worcester is a beautiful city with a wealth of history and a great place to live. These are things that the Council should preserve and enhance.  While there has been some good work in the past few years I feel there is a great deal which could still be done to make Worcester a productive and green city: the Council’s record on recycling could be improved, I would like to see the implementation of glass collection, planning designs could be improved to enhance the historical nature of the town and a more innovative approach in general are the kind of changes I would make.”
